Sigi la! You Eat Your Fiber

Image
Baby Kora is a good eater. But yesterday and today she started getting fussy while eating. Then came the teddy-bear poop face, which is like winnie the pooh smiling, except it's not because he found honey, it's because he's bearing-down (pun intended). I talked to a nurse today about Kora's poop and described it as Teddy Bear Poop Face and she said, "I know exactly what you're talking about." Anyway, babies are allowed to grunt and push a little while pooping, but it seems like Kora might need a little more water with her food along with more fiber. The goal is "mashed potato" textured poop, not "smashed ube," I guess. (Smashed ube in, smashed ube out?) TBPF arrived 3 times today, all during mealtimes. I guess her high chair is her #1 place to #2. Maybe eating just reminds her body to make room for more food. TMI alert, when I stay at my parents' house, this is exactly what happens to me every breakfast. 😬 The reminding

Ayna! Pampano!

Kora is 8 mo old today! For lunch she ate pampano with carrots and ube+cow's milk. She liked the pampano. Filipino baby! In a couple days she'll be eating frijoles negros. Then after that it'll be gallo pinto. Bebita Tica! She really loves everything though. Today I portioned or her food and she probably ate another half serving everything and was still hungry. Masibasiba!

Anya! Yogurtes!

Happy New Year! Kora ate organic whole milk vanilla yogurt today. She was supposed to eat plain because of the sugar, but the organic section at Safeway was skinny. We'll let her eat plain later and the grownups will eat the vanilla with granola and chocolate chips. Hehee. We'll, not Tío. Today we mixed it with banana. She also ate ube with whole milk and espinacas and avocado. She likes espinacas over eggs, maybe because the eggs are kinda chunky. She liked both ube+milk and espinacas+aguacate, but she slightly liked ube+milk more. I got jealous and made myself an adult serving of ube and milk. 😂.  Tomorrow we give her a little bit more cow's milk products, then move on. I suppose we should do wheat and soy... At first she was eating only for the flavor, but it seems like now she's eating for the extra calories. She was starting to be unsatisfied with her dede supply a little while back, but has been pretty happy since we bumped her up to 3 solid meals a day.

Ni! Spinach again!

Today Kora's amá made her a scrambled egg, and served it to her mixed with tomato purée from yesterday.  I think the way to make the egg best is to scramble, microwave, and then strain completely.  My advice for straining any food is to use a big mixing bowl and a big strainer, even though it's a small quantity.  Straining food can be tedious and it doesn't help to work with a small surface area.  Tonight's food was spinach, which I steamed and whizzed in the mini food processor. Kora's amá requested that the spinach remain chunky, but the result of the whizzing was uneven, so I passed it thorough the food mill with the biggest holes. I think that spinach should be served with Vitamin C so that the iron gets absorbed. Today that Vitamin C was tomato purée from before, but in the future it can be broccoli.   Pretty soon this baby will be sitting up straight, holding up her head, and eating with her hands. That stage will be great for practicing knife skills.

Ayna! Egg and tomato again!

Kora has been eating food combos with 1 new ingredient per meal. Today is day 2 of eggs which has been combined with banana and aguacate + dede today.  She's getting her new dishwasher installed now while she naps with her mama. Tanks be to God.

Ok, I didn't really make Kora the 番茄炒蛋 that is pictured above. For Kora I scrambled one egg and cooked it without any oil, and then strained it. I also whizzed one roma tomato and strained it as well. I put each ingredient in separate jars for her amá to mix as she pleased. I think Kora ate it the tomato egg mix along with some cod soup from earlier this week. I think she enjoyed the combination, you'll have to ask her amá.   Then I made a serving of actual 番茄炒蛋 for the grown ups to eat with rice!   Here are some other things we can make for her from what we have in the house now:  beans (frijoles negros, rojos, peruanos, pintos, great northern beans,  lentils (red, yellow, green) chickpeas acorn squash Here are some things we could repeat, from what we have in the house now:  ube  potato leeks spinach carrot bananas  So far I think she is ok with fish and eggs (still early) and we still have to challenge her with wheat, nuts, and shellfish.  No rush here.   I would like to mak

Ayna! Labalabay to so Sira!

Kora's on day 2 of cod and papas! She likes it! Her papá doesn't like the smell.
