Ni! Spinach again!

Image
Today Kora's amá made her a scrambled egg, and served it to her mixed with tomato purée from yesterday.  I think the way to make the egg best is to scramble, microwave, and then strain completely.  My advice for straining any food is to use a big mixing bowl and a big strainer, even though it's a small quantity.  Straining food can be tedious and it doesn't help to work with a small surface area.  Tonight's food was spinach, which I steamed and whizzed in the mini food processor. Kora's amá requested that the spinach remain chunky, but the result of the whizzing was uneven, so I passed it thorough the food mill with the biggest holes. I think that spinach should be served with Vitamin C so that the iron gets absorbed. Today that Vitamin C was tomato purée from before, but in the future it can be broccoli.   Pretty soon this baby will be sitting up straight, holding up her head, and eating with her hands. That stage will be great for practicing knife skills....

Ayna! Egg and tomato again!

Kora has been eating food combos with 1 new ingredient per meal. Today is day 2 of eggs which has been combined with banana and aguacate + dede today.  She's getting her new dishwasher installed now while she naps with her mama. Tanks be to God.

Ok, I didn't really make Kora the 番茄炒蛋 that is pictured above. For Kora I scrambled one egg and cooked it without any oil, and then strained it. I also whizzed one roma tomato and strained it as well. I put each ingredient in separate jars for her amá to mix as she pleased. I think Kora ate it the tomato egg mix along with some cod soup from earlier this week. I think she enjoyed the combination, you'll have to ask her amá.   Then I made a serving of actual 番茄炒蛋 for the grown ups to eat with rice!   Here are some other things we can make for her from what we have in the house now:  beans (frijoles negros, rojos, peruanos, pintos, great northern beans,  lentils (red, yellow, green) chickpeas acorn squash Here are some things we could repeat, from what we have in the house now:  ube  potato leeks spinach carrot bananas  So far I think she is ok with fish and eggs (still early) and we still have to challenge her with wheat, nuts, and shellfish....

Ayna! Labalabay to so Sira!

Kora's on day 2 of cod and papas! She likes it! Her papá doesn't like the smell.

Ni! Ube again?

Yesterday the whole family went to the Woodland Park Zoo. Kora saw penguins, lions, gorillas, giraffes, and some primates with long white tails.  We bought salted pretzels but Kora is too little for salted pretzels so she had some more mashed ube mixed with a little water.  She didn't see many animals after her lunch because she was sleepy and her little face cold so K zipped her up in the front-pack and she spent the rest of the walk cozy and protected from the cold air. Then we went out and got fish and chips at Ivar's on Lake Union and ate them in the car, but Kora didn't have any fish and chips because she is too little for that.   However, she did request a cod mousse for today, so that's what we'll make for her.

Ayna! Ube!

Kora had three meals today; the first two were avocado . It was the last avocado, and there would have been plenty for a couple of days, but avocado doesn't last, and also, it was an exceptionally delicious jumbo avocado. Kora's meals were about a quarter of the avocado and we adults ate the rest. Actually it was probably just H and I; I don't think K moved fast enough.  I had just baked some potatoes for dinner and threw in the ube just so we could start using it up. I didn't have a plan for it. It turns out, little Kora wanted a third meal. We had the option of spinach, calabacín, banana, potato... but in the end her amá settled on ube since it was already done. I didn't strain it; just mashed it with the masher and left it to her amá to thin out. I don't think she did; I think Kora is looking for chunkiness at this point. H says that she complains when the puree is too thin, we apparently don't move fast enough.   I'm going back to McPhearson's t...

Ayna! Avocado!

Maong a Pasko ed sikayon amin! ¡Feliz Navidad! Merry Christmas! Originally we were making that Kora food and giving it to her over three days, but over the week of Christmas we've been making one-off portions.  Yesterday her amá made her more calabacín, and at one point I think it was mixed with some tomato puree.   Today her amá made her baby guacamole; mashed avocado mixed with dede. The avocados were jumbo from McPherson's, I think $1.50 each. We can get more tomorrow.  Maybe after the holidays we'll go back to meal prepping for Kora, but for now, she's getting special edition made-to-order dishes. She usually eats with an audience on facetime, and she's always masiba.

Ayna! Calabacín!

Today for Kora I made steamed, pureed calabacín.  Also known as calabacita or Mexican squash.  We only had one left, it filled a single baby food jar.
